Excellent article Emma. However (and this is something I just now found out about myself), "cross-domain canonical" was featured a while back on SEOmoz's Whiteboard Friday, and it's supposed to allow rel=canonical to point search engines from one SLD to another.

One of the uses Rand mentioned (using it to "retire" one domain and boost the ranking of its replacement) seems to run against Google google's official position on its intended uses, but at the very least Google (not sure about other search engines) does seem to respect cross-SLD canonical links now.

Great post, DeAnna! I am on Facebook from sunrise to sunset. I check HootSuite a few times an hour for 12-14 hours a day. Those are my two favorites, and I definitely spend a ton of time on them! It doesn't hurt that it is my job to be on them, of course - but even without my job, I'm confident I'd log my daily usage in hours, not minutes.
