Has M-Commerce Finally Arrived? Consumers, Technology and What the Digital Wallet Means for You


During #FutureM week, Karyn Martin (@karynmartin) and I attended a session on the future of mobile commerce as part of the week-long conference here in Boston. The panel featured representatives from major players in the mobile landscape, such as John Caron (@jcaron2) of  Modiv Media, David Chang, (@changds) of WHERE, Ron Elwell (@ronelwell) of Shopximity, and Chris Mahl (@chrismahlny) from SCVNGR and Level Up. Needless to say, we were excited to see what their predictions were for this new frontier.

The major theme that started to surface was the tremendous amount of opportunity that retailers have with mobile commerce. They are able to gain insights about their customers’ behaviors, build loyalty and ultimately strengthen the depth of relationships with consumers. However – we are still years away from major adoption and have merely scratched the surface of what’s possible with mobile commerce.

We’re slowly getting there, though.  John Caron gave the examples that 22 percent of purchases from major internet retailer Rue La La are mobile and that high frequency retailers who have adopted mobile have seen a 10 to 15 percent increase in sales. Japan has had mobile payments for five years. However, retailers are still attempting to figure out what will help the technology cross the threshold into major adoption. Consumers don’t want something that will replace credit cards – those are easy enough to use. So what will mobile commerce offer us that credit cards won’t?

The key is the following concept: mobile commerce isn’t here to totally replace existing brick and mortar shopping experiences, but to enhance them. Adding targeted advertisements and personalized experiences to shoppers is how mobile commerce be able to burst onto the retail scene.

The panel also discussed the three stages of mobile technology:

  • Cute: A mobile app that is easy and fun to use but doesn’t add any value to the retailer. An example of this would be a Foursquare check-in. Cute – but does it translate to more check outs? Not yet.
  • Cool: A mobile app such as QR codes or Square; something that replaces using a credit card but doesn’t have any game changing potential yet.
  • Critical:  A game changer. Examples of this would be what companies like Apple and Lowes are doing – creating technology and habits that will change how consumers behave.

Most of mobile technology lives in the “cool” category for now. However, that’s not to say that some brands aren’t crossing over to “critical.” I wanted to share the following video that was shown during the presentation to give some insight into crossing into that elusive “critical” stage and what’s possible with mobile commerce. This particular video shows how an innovative supermarket in Korea has used mobile commerce to enhance and simplify shoppers’ experiences.

Tablets and e-Readers in Education

As a college student, I have seen a lot of changes in the use of technology in the classroom over the past few years.  With the release of Apple’s iPad last year, tablet PCs have become the new craze.  And, it’s a trend which is here to stay, according to a Pearson Foundation survey.  According to the survey, nearly half of college students believe that tablets will take the place of paper textbooks by 2016.  This seems feasible – the iPad serves as an ultra-portable, streamlined PC whose compatibility with the latest applications is enticing.  As a college student, an application called iBooks (pictured below) that allows you to read your favorite books on your iPad caught my attention.

Although iBooks does not yet offer a textbook rentals option, Amazon’s Kindle rolled out this feature just last month.  Students can access their textbooks on e-readers such as the Kindle and Barnes & Noble’s Nook for a fraction of the cost.  Not sure how long you will need to rent a textbook?  Not a problem – Amazon offers a pay-as-you-go service that lets you start or stop a rental at your leisure.

For me, at first there was a BIG “but” in this e-reader buzz.  For the first time in 15 years of schooling, my college courses are requiring the use of e-readers in place of a physical textbook.  Last semester (second semester of sophomore year) I had an online textbook for an information systems class, which to me made sense.  Now, for the upcoming semester while I study abroad in Spain, half of my classes will utilize e-readers in place of textbooks.  These courses include Spanish literature, business management, and international marketing, all of which are bound to include lots of text and graphics.  Highlighting important information and jotting down notes by hand using a textbook is a study skill that will be hard to give up.  As nearly 90% of students believe tablets help them study more efficiently, I can’t help but wonder if my grades will go up.  Also, almost 75% of students who own tablets, not just for reading purposes, prefer tablets to traditional textbooks.  Who knew?

As it appears now, using e-readers are in students’ near futures worldwide.  If you are one of the 3 out of 4 students who says studying with technology is a must, are looking to become more familiar with an e-reader, or want to be introduced (as it is in my case) to e-readers, check out a helpful program called “Kno” (pictured below) for the iPad.

Make Your Best Blogs Your Guest Blogs


For a beginning blogger, finding a niche and cultivating it is nearly impossible. You can write a thousand of the most amazing articles but they will never be seen if you don’t market it. The same goes for the opposite, you can market your blog to everybody, but you will only attract repeat visitors if your content is engaging. (This is especially true in a day and age, where amazing, captivating content will have readers searching for your “Follow Me on Twitter” button). Growing your blog takes a bit of time to work out the kinks; achieving great content regularly, and having a community of people behind each post likely won’t happen until your blog matures.

Following the lifecycle of your blog, if you are in the early beginning (0-2 years old) you should consider guest blogging. Guest blogging is one of the best ways to create partnerships, build links, and attract new audiences. This is why you should make your best blogs your guest blogs.

Create Partnerships

The key to any businesses marketing success is creating partnerships that last. Whether you are in sales or content marketing, partnerships drive long term growth. Having a list of contacts that are in your niche can prove invaluable as your business grows. You will be able to leverage these contacts for advertising opportunities and mutual expansion. Partnerships also allow you to reach new audiences – guest bloggers often promote your article to their followers.

Attract New Readers

One of the best ways to find a community, is to share a community with another site while guest blogging. A well written article will inspire readers to learn more about the writer. I find that a majority of our blog traffic comes from sites we have guest posted on. Ideally, you will be able to leverage social media tools to attract and retain people interested in your content. If a person is directed to your blog via link from a guest post, you will want to put a call to action immediately for them to follow you.

Twitter Follow Button

You are in luck: Twitter just announced a new plug-in resource. A one click “Follow” button can now be embedded in your blog posts to let readers follow you without leaving your site. This resource can also be added to a guest blog if your guest domain allows it.

Build Links

As a small blog, you will need to build links. If you aren’t well versed in SEO, you may want to consult someone who is, before you begin guest blogging. If that isn’t an option, simply point your links to your blog’s home page. Building links from credible sites gives you search engine relevance. You will begin to appear more often in searches, and your site will be continue to be indexed by Google.

Saving your best posts for your guest posts help you grow as a young blogger. Even if your blog isn’t small, never outsource your content for guest blogging. You will ruin partnerships and ultimately give your business bad PR.

A funny thing happened on the way to the office…

This morning I spent a few minutes moving bags filled with obviously unwanted phone books from our building’s entrance way. (See picture below.) As I moved the bags I couldn’t help but ask myself, “Who still uses these books? How much did they cost to print? How many trees were cut down to produce enough books even for just our city of Boston?”

It was odd that eight bags of phone books were delivered to a building that has only two companies. I assumed that they must deliver books based upon the number of phone lines within the building (our small company has four phone lines), and started thinking about how many people in our business neighborhood were moving piles and piles of books just like me.


I write this post because I am really curious to see if anyone reading it uses paper phone books still and/or knows of a coworker, friend, or family member who does as well. If you do know someone who uses one (or, better, still advertises in one), I would hope you could share your comments with us.

Angela Connor (@communitygirl) is the Managing Editor of User-Generated Content at Her job includes managing day-to-day content direction, long term planning strategies and driving user engagement. Todd Defren (@tdefren) currently works at SHIFT Communications. The company is a hybrid PR firm in Boston that works with clients such as Club Med, Virgin Mobile, Bing and Wells Fargo. Defren is a co-founder and Board Member of the Social Media Club and an Advisory Board Member for the SmartBrief on Social Media.
